As we find ourselves adjusting to the ‘new normal’ post lock-down, an increased number of candidates have found themselves in the position of needing to find a new role within the Auckland Construction market. For some, this maybe a daunting and unfamiliar position with a huge amount riding on the result of the job interview.

Preparation is key, heres some tips to help.

If you’re wanting to stand yourself in good stead then have a read through my list of considerations prior to your post-Covid interview;

  • Research the company – Most interviewers will expect you to know some background/detail on who the company is and what they do
  • Relax and never come across desperate – Although you may have been out of work for a period and needing work ASAP, you certainly shouldn’t let that come across to an employer
  • Dress to the occasion – Make sure you’re presentable, first impressions count but don’t overdress; being suited and booted for a construction interview can be counterproductive
  • Talk confidently about your strengths and skill set without being overconfident or cocky
  • Prepare some examples of achievements and be able to back them up with details
  • Be prepared to be flexible – You may need to widen your criteria and be open to a role that isn’t quite your first choice
  • Be open to discussing salary/package – We are seeing a small decrease in average salaries; you may need to accept a salary that isn’t quite at pre-Covid level to secure your role
  • Have at least 2 or 3 references available – These should contain at least 1 reference from your previous employer
  • Think about relevant questions you can ask at the end of the interview, this will make you sound interested and engaged
